24/10/17 – Short Horror Idea ‘Window’ FINAL DRAFT

I’ve been caught up with different work for the past couple of weeks, including researching and drafting more of my feature-length idea so when I returned after a short break to the ‘Window’ script I was able to look upon it with fresh eyes. Because I’ve decided to actually produce the script myself this meant that the next draft will probably be the last but to be honest the most I could do to it was simply reword certain phrases, fix spelling and punctuation mistakes and then format it differently to create tension, as some screenwriters such as Russell T. Davies find the use of spacing and short sentences in scripts to, much like fictional prose, create a sense of urgency or tension for the reader (Davies and Cook, 2010, 136) and I want to emulate a similar feeling in my work. It just meant that it ended with me not necessarily changing very much sadly.

12/10/17 – Short Horror Idea (First Draft)

Over the past two days I’ve quickly gathered together a short story to center around the main visual image within my script – which is at the moment titled ‘Window’ (yeah, original). Heavily inspired by short horror films online such as Lights Out (2013, Sandberg) I decided to make the short mostly without dialogue in my first draft, as the horror genre relies heavily on the use of sound and that’s something I wanted to explore within the script. I decided to tell the story of an unknown male struggling with work, and have the antagonist/spirit serve as a distraction from that, mostly to contrast the mundane action the character is undertaking and to normalise the entire situation and hopefully make an audience feel as though it could happen to them in the same space. Due to knowing the space I wanted for the script and having a minimal amount of plot, I didn’t really need to do any research for the script as of yet outside of visualising what is going on, and I feel like the script was a good exercise for increasing the tension in my writing.
